When do I need to use a thermal spacer or thermal isolator?

Generally, objectives that are challenging to heat or are attached to a turret with several other objectives that are not being removed are recommended to have a thermal spacer to better propagate heat to the objective without excess heat being radiated through the turret.  Thermal Isolators are fitted with an AR window and enable a dry air trap to prevent condensation on cooled objectives when using an objective cooler.

Thermal Isolator
The Bioptechs’ Thermal Isolator is a device made of a material having a low thermal conductivity and mounts between the objective and nosepiece used to reduce heat exchange between the objective and nosepiece. It is used when cooling objectives below ambient temperatures. It also contains a two sided AR coated window and gas ports through which dry air is introduced to prevent condensation.

Thermal Spacer
The Bioptechs’ Thermal Spacer is a device made of a material having a low thermal conductivity and mounts between the objective and nosepiece used to reduce heat exchange between the objective and nosepiece. It is used when heating objectives above ambient temperatures. It will enhance the thermal transfer efficiency of the objective heater (see thermographs below)
